Leave balances nobody has to reconcile

Accrual, carry-over and unpaid days are where leave registers and payroll stop agreeing.

Two records of leave — the register and the payroll sheet — will eventually disagree, and the reconciliation will land on whoever is least able to refuse it. One record, feeding both, is the whole fix.

Decide what happens at the edges

  • How accrual works for a mid-year joiner
  • What carries over at year end, and what lapses
  • How unpaid leave reaches payroll as a deduction
  • Who can approve leave that takes a balance negative

These four answers are what a leave policy actually is. Once they are configured, balances stop being a monthly negotiation.

Your next payroll could be the last hard one.
